Kiwanis International is a worldwide service
organization for business professionals who
work to improve their communities. Kiwanis Clubs
sponsor the other members of the Kiwanis Family
through advice, manpower, and financial support.
The first Kiwanis club was organized in Detroit,
Michigan in 1915. Today, Kiwanis exists in 80
countries, consisting of more than 300,000 members.
In 1919, at the Kiwanis International Convention
held in Birmingham, Alabama, delegates voted
to purchase the legal rights to the word "Kiwanis"
from its founder, Allen S. Browne. With this
independence came the decision to change the
focus of Kiwanis from a club promoting better
business relations between members to one promoting
service in the community. There are more than
12,500 Kiwanis members in more than 300 clubs
in the Florida District.
